What is male urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. This can happen for different reasons. Among the most common are urinary sphincter deficiency, overactive bladder muscle, and incomplete emptying of the bladder.

In men, it can usually be of 2 types:

  • Stress incontinence is that which occurs when there is an increase in pressure in the bladder associated with events such as sneezing, coughing, or straining when lifting something heavy. It could occur after operations on the prostate and / or the pelvic area (total incontinence), radiation therapy, urine overflow from an enlarged prostate or obstruction in the urethra (“overflow incontinence”), spinal problems or neurological diseases.
  • Urge incontinence is that which occurs when the patient cannot stand the urge to urinate, having accidents trying to get to the bathroom. The urge to urinate is so unexpected and intense that the patient cannot control it. This condition could be associated with an enlarged prostate, a diet high in irritants, problems with the nerves of the spine, neurological diseases, infectious or inflammatory processes of the bladder, and/or the prostate.

What are the symptoms of male incontinence?

Symptoms vary depending on the type of incontinence. Usually the patient may experience:

  • Involuntary emptying of the entire bladder
  • Small urine leaks when lifting heavy objects
  • Urgent urge to urinate that cannot be controlled
  • Nocturnal enuresis (wetting the bed when sleeping)
  • Urine stains on underwear

How can this condition be treated?

The first step is to diagnose the type of incontinence from which the patient suffers. Therapies can vary depending on the type of dysfunction:

  • Drug therapy
  • Biofeedback therapy or biological feedback
  • Surgery to relieve obstruction of the prostate or urethra
  • Male sling surgery or urethral sling insertion
  • Surgery to insert an artificial urinary sphincter
